Barefootmusicnews interviews O’Brien in the Jungle Studio

A very creative interview for Shane O’Brien. The media comes to the Jungle Studio. That’s where the magic happens, and there was no better place on earth to find the center core of O’Briens Edge.

See and hear Shane O’Brien respond to a unique Q & A interview with host Ed Lapple:

The Jungle Studio in San Pedro, California. This desk is in a perfect place for all who visit this studio. Scattered on the desktop surface are all 24 CD’s from the Shane O’Brien CD/DVD catalog. It represents a certain sincerity of efforts from all musicians who participated in a Shane O’Brien recording session. Many have signed a display guitar on the walls before leaving the building. Many musicians have left an object of memorabilia for display on wall space within the Jungle Studio.

  1. There are times in people’s lives, when one reconnects with someone from their past, and the memories come flooding back. I experienced that today when I reconnected with Shane, a high school friend, who I was able to communicate with once again through the miracle of the internet.

I met Shane in 72 or 73, and shared many good times through our high school years. Weekends were party time, grab a case of beer, some hooch, and try to find somewhere to drink it without getting busted.

We lived life hard and fast, even though it wasn’t necessary , but the 70’s were like that. We gave our parents, teachers, employers, the law, a real run for their money! The thing I remember about Shane was he was fearless. He was at an advanced level in Martial Arts before he even started high school.
I don’t remember Shane being afraid of anything, especially not pursuing your dreams, no matter what the odds.

Shane was the type of guy, who ,when he got a hold of something he wanted, a goal, or objective, he went all out, there were no half measures. It was like that with the guitar. Once Shane had a guitar in his hands, he was obsessed with learning everything there was to know about it. I remember those very early days, we were just kids, but Shane was already putting a band together and jammin every chance he got. In garages, church basements, wherever he could. Shane excelled at learning music and playing guitar faster than anyone I had ever seen. There were no formal music lessons that I knew of. Shane had a natural ability to simply listen to music and be able to teach himself how to play it.
After high school, I went to work at Chrysler Corp. and we lost touch. It must have been a year or so later, I was invited to a barn, out in the county ,for some after hours partying, and Shane was playing guitar in a band using the barn for practice. I remember being amazed and blown away at how good Shane had become in such a short time! This would have been around the late seventies, and the last time I remember seeing Shane.

Today, while attending a Cancer fundraiser, I ran into Shane’s younger sister, who recognized me and I am so glad she did.

Some days, when I think back at the craziness, it is hard to comprehend why we did the things we did, but we had fun, and a man, much wiser than me once told me, “you should never regret your youth”

Shane, I hope that someday we will meet in person, but in the meantime, I am just glad that we were able to reconnect. You have obviously touched allot of people with your musical talent, and I know I am going to enjoy listening to all I can.

    1. Hello Mike
Man oh man, I have been so busy lately in regards to My Day gig as a Union Ironworker out of Local 433 Los Angeles and add in my night time life long habit of playing my own music as much as possible. Then today I got a chance to read some of the most inspiring comments of which I could have never imagined all throughout this web site. Moving is a good word here…
Then I read your’s right here! Mike what can I say? You were such a great friend to me way back in those early influential years. The music you enjoyed listening to at a good volume I will never forget. It was in your basement we listened to Humble Pie, 30 days in the hole or how about Uriah Heed and Deep Purple, Sabbath, Zep, The Who, Floyd and so many, many more. Maybe I will write and record a song about our early basemen years et all. If that’s Okay with you?
Now here we are today. A reconnect of a friendship shared some 30 plus years ago. We are still here my friend and there must be a reason, wouldn’t you agree? It is said that there is a reason for everything…
Thank You Mike, I really appreciated your words deeply.

  2. Hi Shane,
All I can say, is your music is incredible!

I know it has been over 30 years. I ran into Carol at dragonboating and she gave me a little background.

I can’t wait to purchase some of your music, past and present.

    Keep on rockin!

  3. There is a drum in “The Jungle”.
A rhythm of musical motion, constantly creating its song
To master the reigns of this fiery dragon while riding the waves that flow,
Is a task of great difficulty and relentless passion

In a world of rhythm, meter
And that dancing beat all of us love so dear
I believe that Shane O’Brien is a true emissary
    Of its great masterful purity

And I have yet to meet any other worthy of that title

There are times when we all need an escape to somewhere or something that can relieve our minds and bodies from different levels of stress that may come our way in life, and when we do it’s nice to know that someone has provided such a pleasure for us. Such is the gift and talent we are blessed with that comes from the music shared with us from Shane O’Brien

  7. It was nice going back in time with you Shane. The house still stands and your room is still called Shane’s room. Your strobe lights are still in the attic. There’s a stop sign in there too that I don’t dare throw out in case it’s actually a genuine street sign you got from our city, for one of your gigs maybe! Perhaps not, but like everything you do, it does look genuine. That would be some 37 years ago maybe! I also recall you locking yourself in your bedroom for 9 months, at first making noise, then some sounds and finally giving birth to your music & style with Dad’s guitar.
Enjoyed your music then and enjoy your music now, so masterly produced. Love and hugs, Mom/Dad

  8. Shane,

You are Positively, Absolutely The Genuine One without a doubt!
Another word that comes to mind Brilliant!! I Just spent the better part of my nite into the morning exploring your new site and I was truley moved. I laughed and I cried and became mezmarized.
The song you wrote for your 5 band members who have passed is Legitttt!! The way you gave each one there due with so much care in every word and at the same time let the truth be told this was to me way up over the top greatness.

What you have done here is a gift in so many different ways. And I have to give credit due to your Web master Scott James for keeping it simple and easy to go in and out and thru browsing the web pages and not a maze so difficult you say ahhh F— it before experiencing anything.

This was for me a nice ride and one i will take again and again!!

Shane i will call you later today!! Again Thank you for this and i know i am not alone on the impact that this has had and will continue to have as long as you keep puttin out there!!
